Describe your company
Share your stage, goals, team shape, constraints, and the work that is currently getting stuck. The more specific the constraint, the sharper the plan.
Not sure who, or whether, you should hire next? The Planner turns your biggest constraint into ranked options across hiring, automation, workflow redesign, and role augmentation, so you make the call with the tradeoffs in front of you.

What It Is
A free planning tool from Human in the Loop Talent that helps startup founders and people leaders work out whether their next constraint needs a new hire, an automation, a redesigned workflow, or an augmented role, before anyone opens a search.
We built it by encoding the same workforce architecture questions we work through with clients: what work actually needs to exist, what it costs in its current shape, and whether a person, a workflow, or a structure change removes the constraint. The Planner applies that method to your inputs. It does the analysis; you keep the decision.
The name is the point. Revenue per employee, annual revenue divided by headcount, is the cleanest measure of whether your team design is working, and every recommendation the Planner makes is aimed at improving it. Our guide to what revenue per employee is and how to improve it covers the metric itself.
The Problem It Solves
Something is slow, someone says "we need a growth marketer," and a search opens for a title before anyone has checked whether the underlying work needs a person at all. That is how teams end up with headcount that made revenue per employee worse instead of better.
The Planner forces the order back around: constraint first, options second, role definition last, and only if hiring wins the comparison.
How It Works
01
Share your stage, goals, team shape, constraints, and the work that is currently getting stuck. The more specific the constraint, the sharper the plan.
02
The Planner asks the questions a workforce architect would ask, instead of jumping to a generic role recommendation: what the work actually is, who touches it, and what happens if nothing changes.
03
You get a ranked set of moves across hiring, automation, redesign, and augmentation, with the reasoning attached. The decision stays with you.
The Four Calls
Hiring is one of them, not the default.
| Option | What it means | When it is the right call |
|---|---|---|
| Hire | Add a person | The work needs durable human judgment, it will still exist at similar volume in twelve months, and it is big enough to amortize a salary. |
| Automate | Build an AI-enabled workflow | The work is repetitive, rule-shaped, or data-movement, and a person in the loop can review the output faster than they could produce it. |
| Redesign | Change how the work flows | The bottleneck is unclear ownership or a process problem, and adding a person would staff the symptom rather than fix the cause. |
| Augment | Give an existing role more leverage | Someone already owns the work and is good at it; what they lack is tooling, so the cheapest capacity is making them faster. |

What The Output Looks Like
A hypothetical example of the shape, for a 12-person company whose founder is buried in sales operations:
This is an illustrative example, not a real client output. Your plan depends entirely on what you tell the Planner.
Who It Is For
Usually at one of three moments:
Cost And Practicalities
The Planner is free, with no signup on our side and nothing to install. It runs inside ChatGPT under the same name, Revenue per Employee Planner. A free ChatGPT account is enough, and a focused session takes about ten to fifteen minutes.
What It Will Not Do
It will not make the decision.
The Planner produces analysis and options. A person reviews them and decides. No hiring, firing, or employment decision is ever made by the tool.
It is not employment, legal, or compensation advice.
Treat the output as a structured starting point for your own judgment.
It can be wrong.
It reasons from what you tell it, and like any AI-assisted analysis it can misread a situation. Check the reasoning, not just the conclusion.
It does not run searches.
If the plan says hire, defining and filling the role is a separate job. That one is ours, if you want the help.
It is not private infrastructure.
It runs on ChatGPT under OpenAI’s terms, so keep confidential details out of your inputs.
What Happens Afterward
Most people take the plan to their team and act on the redesign and automation items themselves. Re-run it when the constraint changes; it is free every time.
And when the plan says the answer is a hire, that is where we come in: scoping the role precisely and running the search. Nothing about using the Planner obligates you to work with us.
