When do companies like mine hire their first salesperson?
Companies that posted each sales role, by company size
Twelve months to October 2026. Shares are of the companies in the band that posted any role, given only where 30 of them did.

48 of 94 companies posted a role
50 to 99 people

For founders and CEOs
Find your size band. If most companies your size that posted anything posted an account executive and few posted a sales leader, the question to settle before you post is who owns the number until a leader arrives.
For portfolio talent teams
The bands show where account executive searches cluster across the companies we follow. A portfolio company in a band where few posted a sales leader may be about to.
For hiring managers
If you are the person a first account executive would report to, the band shows how many peers your size were looking for the same seat this year.
Questions people ask
At what size should I hire my first salesperson?
The postings do not name a size, and this page will not. They show how many companies of each size posted an account executive, an SDR or a sales leader this year, so you can see whether you are early or late against companies like yours.
Should the first sales hire be an account executive or a leader?
In every band more companies posted an account executive than a sales leader. That is a count of postings, not a sequence: the data cannot show which came first at any one company.
Does a posting mean the company hired someone?
No. A posting says a company was looking for the role, not that it filled it, and a company that posted the same role five times counts once. The page reads what was posted and listed, never who was hired.
Is a company that posted nothing not hiring?
Not necessarily. Many companies hire through referrals, agencies and their own networks and never post, and many run no public job board we can read. A company with no posting we could read is unknown, so every figure here counts the companies that did post, and is the least of the group that was hiring a role, never the most.
Methodology and data
Window
2025-10-25 to 2026-10-25: a posting counts when its posting date (or, without one, the day we first saw it) falls inside the window.
Who is included
- Each band is stated over the companies in the band with any posting in the window (the benchmark band rule), and the band total is printed beside it.
- Bands come from each company's latest headcount; 48 companies with no headcount are left out.
Coverage
- Every group we follow except the Vista Equity Partners portfolio (excluded: its median company has 814 employees, far above Series B, and its history was read at a cap of 10 a company).
- Postings pool the twelve-month history and the weekday board read, so a company counts once if either source shows the role.
Limits and caps
- A share needs 30 posting companies in the band: 20 to 49 and 50 to 99 people qualify today; 1 to 19 and 100 to 199 show counts.
- Sales leader is counts only in every band for a claim about the seat; no sentence states an order of hires, which the data cannot show.
- A share is stated only over 30 companies or more; below that the page gives counts. Medians, never means. Rules dashboards@1.0.0 (src/lib/dashboards.ts, tested in test/dashboards.test.ts).
When each figure can be stated
| Figure | Stated from |
|---|---|
| Account executive share at 20 to 49 and 50 to 99 people | today: each band has more than 30 companies that posted a role |
| Sales leader, any band | counts only; a share for the 20 to 49 band about February 2028 at the current rate of new companies |
| 1 to 19 people | counts only, not within 180 days |
| 100 to 199 people | counts only until 30 companies in the band post a role |
